Xbox Game Pass Is Getting a Price Hike and the Internet Is Handling

Persona #3 · Vol: 0

Microsoft just did the thing everyone pretended they wouldn't do.

In a move that shocked absolutely no one who has been paying attention since 2017, Xbox Game Pass is getting more expensive, and the base tier is getting a little less generous.

The company framed it as "evolving the value proposition," which is corporate speak for "we checked, and you'll probably still pay." Reddit, naturally, is taking it about as well as a toddler being told the iPad needs to charge.

Here's the gist, minus the marketing gloss.

The top-tier Ultimate plan is now $19.99 a month, up from $16.99.

The standard Game Pass tier jumped from $10.99 to $14.99.

Meanwhile, day-one releases are now locked behind the pricier Ultimate tier, because of course they are.

If you were on the cheaper plan hoping to play the next big exclusive on launch day, congratulations, you just got promoted to a more expensive subscription you didn't ask for.

The timing is chef's kiss terrible for Microsoft's reputation.

The company spent years positioning Game Pass as the best deal in gaming, the Netflix of video games, the thing that made the Series S worth owning.

Now it's doing the classic streaming-service shuffle: raise prices, gut features, and dare you to cancel.

It's called every streaming service in the last four years.

The reaction online has been a masterclass in gallows humor.

One top comment on the Xbox subreddit read, "So the deal was too good to be true, and it was true, and now it's not a deal." Another user pointed out that at $19.99 a month, you could buy roughly two new games a year and actually own them, which is the kind of logic that gets you banned from the fanboy Discord servers.

The memes are flowing, the cancellation screenshots are piling up, and somewhere a Microsoft executive is staring at a dashboard wondering why the "engagement" numbers look like a ski slope.

If you play three or four big games a year and don't care about owning anything, Ultimate still pencils out.

But the margin is razor thin now, and the moment you take a month off, the math collapses.

This is the subscription trap in a nutshell: they get you comfortable, then they squeeze.

The only real defense is the one nobody wants to hear, which is to actually do the math on your own gaming habits instead of trusting a press release.

Microsoft, for its part, says this is about "delivering more value to more players." Translation: they ran the numbers and decided the churn from angry Redditors is cheaper than the revenue they'd lose by staying put.

It's also exactly the kind of business that makes people dust off their old physical disc drives and mutter about the good old days. **Our take:** Game Pass is still a solid service, but the era of it being an obvious no-brainer is officially over.

If you're grandfathered into a deal, hold onto it like a winning lottery ticket.
