Okay so I've been rocking the same crusty built-in laptop cam for like three years and my Zoom calls have been giving potato quality the whole time.

The good ones lock on fast and stay there.
If a cam can't hold focus on your face, it's cooked, no matter what the spec sheet says.
Low light is the other trap. 4K sounds elite until your room gets dim and suddenly you're a grainy mess.
A bigger sensor beats a bigger number every single time.
Don't let the marketing fool you into thinking resolution is the whole story, because it absolutely is not.
A lot of these cams come with a physical shutter or a little privacy cover.
The paranoia is valid and it costs you nothing.
Plus some models have a light that tells you when it's live, which is lowkey comforting.
Setup was honestly plug and play, which surprised me.
USB-C in, pick it in your settings, done.
No driver nightmare, no random software begging for admin rights.
That part I'll give them full credit for.
If you're on calls all day, stream, or just want to stop looking like a 2009 flip phone selfie, yeah, an external cam is a solid glow up.
Just don't overpay for the 4K badge alone.
Chase the sensor, the autofocus, and the low-light chops instead.
My take: the upgrade is real but the marketing is mid.
Buy for the sensor, not the number, and you'll actually feel the difference every single call.
