So I'm scrolling TikTok last night and every third video is someone losing their ENTIRE mind over a charging station.
The Ionna Rechargeries just opened their first flagship spots and the internet is genuinely gagged.
Tesla Superchargers walked so these could run, and run they did.
We're talking canopies, clean bathrooms, actual coffee that doesn't taste like regret, and a lounge that looks like an airport first class section but for people with a Nissan Ariya.
For YEARS, EV charging has been the cringe part of the whole vibe.
You pull up, half the stalls are broken, the app won't load, someone's parked their Rivian in a plug spot and ghosted, and you're standing in a Walmart parking lot at 11pm questioning every life choice that led you here.
It was giving "beta test forever." Ionna is the glow up.
It's a joint venture between eight major automakers — BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Stellantis, Toyota — which basically means the Avengers assembled, but for plugs.
Their whole thing is "Rechargeries," and yes the name is a little much, but the product is not playing.
Ionna says their stations hit 350kW, which is fast fast.
We're talking 10 to 80 percent in the time it takes to demolish a Chipotle bowl.
They're planning 30,000 charge points across North America, and the first wave is landing in spots people actually go to, not the back corner of a dying strip mall.
Because it finally treats EV charging like a place you WANT to be.
Food that isn't a sad hot dog on a roller.
The bigger picture is brutal for the old guard.
Electrify America has been getting cooked online for years over reliability, and honestly the memes write themselves.
Meanwhile Tesla opened its network to other brands, which helped, but the Supercharger experience is still very "gas station but make it minimal." Ionna is out here building the Cheesecake Factory of charging and people are eating it up.
Some of the hype is straight up astroturfed on X.
And at the end of the day, charging speed depends on YOUR car, not just the station, so your 2019 Bolt isn't suddenly going to hit 350kW because the canopy looks nice.
But for the average American driver who's been on the fence about going electric, this is the vibe shift that matters.
The number one excuse — "where do I charge and is it gonna suck" — is finally getting a real answer.
And the answer is a building with a bathroom and a latte, not a cracked screen on a pole.
My take: this is the most important EV story of the year and it's not even close.
Cars are cars, they all have screens now.
The charging experience is the actual product, and Ionna just showed everyone how mid the competition has been.
Final Thoughts
If they can scale without the quality falling off, gas stations should be nervous.
