Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Are Already a Dumpster Fire and Nobody Is

Persona #3 · Vol: 0

Nintendo finally pulled back the curtain on the Switch 2 this week, and the internet responded the way it always does: with the enthusiasm of a golden retriever and the organizational skills of a raccoon in a hurricane.

The console launches June 5 at $449.99, with a Mario Kart World bundle running $499.99.

Within minutes, retailer sites buckled, Discord servers turned into war rooms, and grown adults started refreshing Target's app like it owed them money.

The hardware itself is a genuine upgrade, which is the part everyone keeps forgetting to talk about.

You get a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD screen, 4K output when docked, 256GB of storage, and the new Joy-Con 2 controllers that finally—allegedly—won't drift into the sun.

There's also a mysterious "C" button that Nintendo is being coy about, plus a built-in mic and a second USB-C port.

It's the Switch you already own, but with the specs you actually wanted four years ago.

The pricing, though, is where things get spicy.

Games now cost $79.99 for the big first-party titles, and the Switch 2 Edition upgrades for existing games like Breath of the Wild run $10 a pop.

Nintendo also confirmed that some physical game cards are really just download codes in a plastic shell, which is a bold way to charge full price for a box that contains nothing but disappointment and a QR code.

Walmart, Best Buy, and GameStop all staggered their windows, which somehow made things worse.

Bots cleaned out inventory in under two minutes, real humans got stuck in virtual queues behind 40,000 other people, and someone on Reddit claims they saw a scalper listing a console for $1,200 before the official page even finished loading.

Nintendo says it's "working with retailers" to combat resellers, which is corporate for "thoughts and prayers." Analysts expect this thing to sell out through the holidays regardless.

The original Switch moved over 140 million units, and the install base has been starving for a sequel since roughly the Bush administration.

If you're on the fence, the smart play is probably to wait for the inevitable restock wave in August rather than paying a guy named Chad triple retail on eBay. **Our take:** The Switch 2 looks like a legitimately great console trapped inside a genuinely terrible buying experience.

If you can be patient, you'll save money and your sanity.

Final Thoughts

If you can't, welcome to the jungle—there's a C button somewhere in there waiting for you.
