If you bought a smart bulb or doorbell in the last two years, you probably noticed a tiny logo on the box: Matter.
It was pitched as the great unifier, the standard that would finally let your Apple, Google, and Amazon gadgets talk to each other.
What almost nobody mentions is who ends up holding the keys.
Matter works by turning your home into a web of "controllers" and "nodes." Your phone, your speaker, your router, even your TV can act as a hub.
Each one keeps its own copy of your device list, your schedules, and your automations.
It also means your smart home no longer lives in one place.
It lives in five, and you control none of them completely.
Here's the part that should raise eyebrows.
When you add a Matter device, you generate something called a "fabric." Every ecosystem you connect joins that fabric.
Leave one out, and it can't see your lights.
But the fabric also lets platforms share your device data in ways the setup screens never explain.
Apple, Google, and Amazon all run their own versions of this.
Each quietly decides how much it tells the others.
Matter devices need firmware, and firmware comes from whoever made the chip inside.
A cheap plug from a no-name brand might use a module from a company you've never heard of.
If that company folds, your device doesn't just lose support.
It can become a zombie node on your network, still broadcasting, still reachable, never patched.
Security researchers have already flagged this.
In 2023 and 2024, several Matter implementations shipped with weak commissioning codes and sloppy certificate handling.
But the pattern is the story: a standard designed for convenience rushed to market faster than its security model matured.
First, check which ecosystems you've linked.
Open the app, find the Matter section, and look at your fabrics.
If you see platforms you don't recognize or no longer use, remove them.
Your router and your smart speaker are now part of your home's security perimeter, whether you treat them that way or not.
Third, buy from brands with a public track record on firmware.
The cheapest Matter plug is rarely the safest one.
It's the best shot we've had at ending the format war, and it's genuinely improving.
But "works with everything" and "controlled by no one" are not the same thing.
Right now, the second part is still an open question.
The uncomfortable truth is that convenience always demands a toll, and smart home buyers are paying it in data and dependency.
Matter gave us interoperability, but it also handed more control to the same three companies we were trying to escape.
