A small disc glides across your living room floor at 2 a.m., bumping gently against the couch, tracing the hallway, slipping under the kitchen table.

It is also, quietly, a census of your life.

Modern robot vacuums from iRobot, Roborock, Ecovacs, and Shark don't just wander anymore.

They use lidar, cameras, and onboard processors to build detailed floor plans of your home.

Some models let you name each space, set no-go zones, and even label where the couch sits.

Mapping vacuums clean faster, skip fewer spots, and stop smashing into your dog's water bowl.

For a household with two jobs and a toddler, that's not a luxury.

But here's the part that rarely makes the product page.

Those maps don't always stay on the device.

Many models sync floor plans to cloud servers so you can check on cleaning from your phone at work.

Some companies have used camera-equipped vacuums to collect images for training AI.

In 2022, an MIT Technology Review report revealed that iRobot's test images—including one of a woman on a toilet—ended up circulating in an online forum.

The company said the images came from a paid data-collection program with consenting participants.

Then consider what a floor plan actually is.

It's a record of how many bedrooms you have, where the crib sits, which door stays closed.

It shows when rooms are empty and when they aren't.

Paired with an app account, it's a profile of a household's rhythms, sold to you as a feature called "Smart Scheduling." Security researchers have spent years poking at these devices.

Some have found ways to hijack a vacuum's camera remotely.

Others have shown that unencrypted map data can leak on a network.

Manufacturers patch as they go, but the pattern is familiar: ship the feature, fix the flaw later, apologize in a blog post nobody reads.

The deeper issue isn't any single company.

It's the bargain we keep accepting without noticing.

We trade the intimate shape of our homes for the ability to skip sweeping.

We let a spinning puck learn our floor plan because the alternative—actually vacuuming—feels like a waste of a Saturday.

Newer models use AI to recognize cords, pet waste, and shoes.

That means the camera isn't just mapping.

It's identifying objects and, in some cases, uploading snapshots to improve the model.

What's strange is how normal it all feels.

Nobody returns one because the privacy policy is fourteen pages.

We plug it in, name it something cute, and let it learn the house.

This isn't a call to toss your vacuum in the trash.

Mapping genuinely makes these gadgets better, and a well-configured device with local-only storage is a reasonable middle ground.

But "reasonable" requires reading settings most of us never open.

If a company can draw a map of your home, it can lose that map.

Your floor plan is worth more than your floors.

The real question isn't whether robot vacuums are convenient.
