The dirty secret isn't that chargers don't exist.

It's that a staggering number of them don't work when you need them.

Independent surveys and driver forums keep surfacing the same complaints.

You pull up to a station with eight stalls, and four are offline.

The one working plug delivers a fraction of its rated speed because of a software glitch or a shared power cabinet.

The payment terminal rejects your card, and the app crashes before you can tap "start charge." Meanwhile, a gas station two blocks away would've taken you ninety seconds.

This is the gap between the map and reality—and it's quietly shaping whether Americans go electric at all.

Range anxiety gets all the headlines, but charger anxiety is the real dealbreaker.

Nobody wants to gamble their family road trip on a single plug in rural Nebraska that TripAdvisor swears exists.

Part of the problem is who owns the chargers.

Unlike gas stations, which converged on a handful of reliable fuel standards decades ago, EV charging is a patchwork of competing networks, hardware makers, and payment systems.

Rivian, Ford, and GM drivers who'd spent years fighting unreliable third-party networks discovered what Tesla owners had taken for granted: plugs that just work.

The scramble to adopt Tesla's NACS connector—now the de facto standard—was less about loyalty and more about desperation.

Yet the fix isn't as simple as everyone switching plugs.

Older stations still run legacy hardware, and interoperability brings its own headaches.

A station that worked flawlessly for a Model Y last month might reject a Mustang Mach-E today after a firmware update.

The infrastructure is maturing faster than the standards governing it.

There's also a quieter issue: uptime reporting is largely self-reported.

Networks grade their own homework, and the definitions of "working" vary wildly.

A charger that delivers 20 kW when it's rated for 350 kW might technically count as online.

The federal government's National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program was supposed to fix this by tying funding to reliability standards.

But rollout has been slow, and some states have barely broken ground.

Meanwhile, private networks are racing to build more stalls rather than maintain the ones they have—because ribbons get cut for new construction, not for uptime.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: we don't need a million chargers.

We need the ones we already have to actually work, every time, for every car.

Until reliability becomes the headline metric instead of raw stall count, the network will keep looking impressive on a spreadsheet and frustrating in real life.
