The EV Charging Network Has a New Problem Nobody Saw Coming

America's charging infrastructure was supposed to be the easy part.

You know, relative to convincing 330 million people to ditch gasoline.

Turns out we built a bunch of plugs and forgot to think about what happens when half of them are broken, occupied, or slower than advertised.

The Federal Highway Administration has been handing out billions to states to build out fast chargers along major corridors.

In practice, you can now drive from Ohio to Nevada and find a charger that technically exists, technically works, and technically delivers a fraction of the speed your car can actually accept.

This is the part where EV owners in the comments start typing in all caps about Electrify America.

But the problem is bigger than one network.

Here's the thing nobody at the ribbon-cuttings wants to say out loud: charging isn't a hardware problem anymore.

A charger is a computer bolted to a parking space, and we all know how well Americans maintain computers in public places.

The numbers get uglier the further you get from California.

Rural corridors have stations with single-digit charger counts, no canopy, no bathroom, no coffee, and a screen that's been showing a Windows error since last Thanksgiving.

Meanwhile, Tesla's Supercharger network is opening up to other brands, which sounds like a win until you realize those stalls are now shared with every Ford, Rivian, and Hyundai on the road.

Some states are trying a new angle: requiring uptime reporting.

If a charger is broken for more than a few days, the operator eats a fine.

Also sounds like something that will be litigated into oblivion by companies that would rather blame the utility, the weather, and a squirrel.

The genuinely interesting shift is that automakers are getting into the charging business directly.

Mercedes, BMW, and others are building their own networks, mostly to avoid the PR disaster of sending customers to a third-party station that doesn't work.

It's a weird admission that the open-network dream from a decade ago kind of flopped.

For anyone shopping for an EV right now, this matters more than range.

A 300-mile car with reliable charging beats a 400-mile car that strands you in Bakersfield.

The honest advice is boring: check the PlugShare reviews for your actual commute before you sign anything.

The closing thought here is that America is really good at building things and really bad at maintaining them.

We've proven that with bridges, and now we're proving it with chargers.
