Matter Promised To Fix Your Smart Home And Mostly Made It Weirder

Persona #3 · Vol: 0

If you bought a "Works with Matter" smart plug in the last two years because a Verge headline swore this was finally the one that talks to everything, you already know how this story ends.

One standard, cooked up by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung, so your lights, locks, and thermostats would stop caring which app you opened.

No more seven bridges, no more "this device isn't compatible with your ecosystem" screens.

Just scan a QR code and live your best life.

In practice, scan the QR code and prepare to enter the support forum thunderdome.

Reddit's r/homeautomation is basically a group therapy session now, full of people posting threads titled "Matter device vanished from Google Home, again" and "Why does my Apple Home think my light is a sensor." Here's the part nobody puts in the marketing.

Matter version 1.0 shipped without support for lots of the stuff people actually care about, like robot vacuums, cameras, and most appliances.

Those came later, sort of, sometimes, depending on which company bothered to implement them.

A Matter logo means the device is *supposed* to work with any Matter controller.

It does not mean your specific controller, on your specific firmware, on your specific phone, will recognize it before you've aged three years.

The funniest bit is that the big platforms are still quietly fighting.

So each one adds "helpful" features that only work if you stay inside their walled garden, which is the exact thing Matter was supposed to bulldoze.

Meanwhile, budget brands slap the Matter logo on boxes like it's a participation trophy.

Buy a cheap Matter bulb off a random marketplace listing and you might discover it needs the manufacturer's app anyway — which is a fun way to learn that a standard can technically support something without anyone supporting it well.

When it works, it genuinely works, and pairing a Matter device with the Thread protocol can feel like time travel compared to the bad old days of Zigbee bridges and prayer.

If you're starting fresh, sure, but stick to big-name brands with actual support pages and return policies.

If your current setup works, don't rip it out to chase a logo.

And if a listing's only selling point is that Matter badge, treat it like a guy at a bar who insists he's a "nice guy" — the claim is doing a lot of work.

Our take: Matter is the USB-C of smart homes, which is to say it's genuinely great and also somehow still a coin flip depending on the cable, the port, and the mood of the universe.

Final Thoughts

Buy it for the future, not for the unboxing.
