And depending on the brand, that map may travel farther than your hallway.
Modern robovacs from iRobot, Roborock, Ecovacs, and Shark rely on LiDAR, cameras, and gyroscopes to build centimeter-accurate maps.
The pitch is convenience: no-go zones, room-by-room cleaning, and "clean the kitchen" voice commands.
The cost is a digital blueprint of your home sitting on a server you've never seen.
In 2022, a report from MIT Technology Review revealed that iRobot's own employees had accessed images captured by Roomba J7 test units — including a photo of a woman on a toilet. iRobot said the images came from a special development program with consenting participants.
But the story confirmed something privacy researchers had warned about for years: camera-equipped vacuums can see a lot more than dirt.
The bigger question is where the maps go.
Most major brands sync floor plans to the cloud so you can control the vacuum from your phone when you're not home.
That means your home's layout — room sizes, furniture positions, how many bedrooms, where the front door sits — lives on someone else's computer.
Security researchers have shown that leaked smart-home data can reveal when you're away, how many people live in a house, and which rooms matter most.
Combine a vacuum map with a data breach, and you've handed a stranger a treasure map.
They point to encryption, anonymization, and strict internal access controls.
