That Crease in Your Pocket Is Costing You $1,800

Persona #1 · Vol: 0

The shiny new foldable sitting in every carrier store window wants you to believe the future has arrived.

It flips open like a sci-fi prop, snaps shut like a makeup compact, and costs more than a decent used car.

But after two weeks of living with one, I've got questions — and so should you.

Here's the pitch the salesperson won't lead with: that bendy display is still glass pretending to be plastic, or plastic pretending to be glass, and nobody's fully solved the magic trick yet.

Run your thumb across the middle and it's like reading a book with a fold down the spine.

The hinge is a marvel of engineering, sure.

Tiny grit gets in there, and suddenly your $1,800 pocket computer sounds like it's chewing gravel when you close it.

Manufacturers will tell you it's rated for hundreds of thousands of folds — which sounds amazing until you realize that's just marketing math nobody can actually verify in real life.

The inner screen is gorgeous for about four minutes until you notice the apps that haven't bothered to adapt, leaving you with black bars and stretched menus that look like a 2009 Android tablet.

You paid flagship money for beta software.

And yet — here's the part that stings — I kind of love it.

Folding a big screen down to fit in my jeans is genuinely useful.

Watching video on a tablet-sized display that lives in my pocket feels like cheating.

It's the price of admission for an idea that's still maturing.

If you're a heavy multitasker, a note-taker, someone who lives on split-screen apps, a foldable can genuinely change how you work.

If you just want a great phone with a great camera and a battery that lasts, you're paying a huge premium for a party trick you'll show off twice and then ignore.

The tech is getting better, the creases are getting fainter, and the prices are slowly — SLOWLY — coming down.

Unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket and a genuine need for that big inner screen, your current phone is probably fine.

The bottom line: foldables are the most exciting thing in phones right now, and also the most overpriced.

Buy one because you'll use the big screen every day, not because the commercial made it look cool.

Your wallet — and your crease-obsessed thumb — will thank you.
