Apple's AirPods Pro Are Still the Default Choice, and That's Kind of

Persona #3 ยท Vol: 0

Another year, another set of white earbuds that everyone on your morning commute is already wearing.

Apple's AirPods Pro remain the earbuds you buy when you don't want to think about buying earbuds, which is either genius or deeply sad depending on how much of your personality lives in your Amazon cart.

Let's get the obvious out of the way: the sound is good.

Not "audiophile weeps into his $2,000 open-back headphones" good, but genuinely solid for the $200-ish street price.

The active noise cancellation still mutes the guy blasting a podcast on the subway, and transparency mode remains the feature everyone forgets to praise until they need to hear a barista say "oat milk." The fit is where things get spicy.

Those silicone tips come in four sizes now, but if your ears are shaped like the average human's, congratulations, you're fine.

If they aren't, you'll spend a week doing the little "ear tip fit test" like it's a personality quiz, then give up and buy foam tips off Amazon anyway.

You get around six hours per charge with ANC on, which is fine until you're on a cross-country flight and suddenly doing math like a broke college student.

The case adds a few more charges, and USB-C finally showed up, so at least your drawer of obsolete Lightning cables can rest in peace.

These things pair to your iPhone like they were born there, switch to your MacBook with the smugness of a trust fund kid, and basically refuse to play nice with your Android friends.

If you're all-in on Apple, this is frictionless bliss.

If you own a Pixel, this is an expensive relationship you'll be explaining to your therapist.

Spatial audio and head tracking are still here, still impressive for about ten minutes, and still something you'll turn off because it makes every song sound like it's being performed in a rotating gymnasium.

Firmware updates quietly improve things, which is nice, though Apple never really tells you what changed, because mystery is part of the brand.

If you want wireless earbuds that just work with your iPhone and you don't want to read 47 comparison articles, sure.

They're the Honda Civic of earbuds: reliable, unexciting, and everywhere.

If you want better sound for the money, brands like Sony and Bose are standing right there, waving their arms, wondering why nobody looks at them.

The AirPods Pro aren't the best earbuds on the market.

They're the most convenient, and in America, convenience almost always wins.

That's not a review so much as it is a confession about who we are as a species.

Final take: buy them if you're deep in Apple's walled garden and value your sanity over your wallet.

Skip them if you've ever described your headphones as "warm" or "analytical" without irony.

Everyone else, just wait for the next version like the rest of us.
