I Found a Game Called "Um" and It Broke My Brain in 4 Minutes

Persona #2 ยท Vol: 2000
ok so i was scrolling at 2am (normal behavior) and i found a game literally called "Um." just "Um." that's it. that's the name. and bestie, i clicked it because who names a game after the sound you make when your brain buffers?? turns out that's the WHOLE POINT and now i can't stop thinking about it. here's the tea. "Um" is a game where you can't say the word "um." that's the entire premise. you have to talk, answer questions, describe stuff, whatever the game throws at you, and the second you say "um" you lose. and uh... it's brutal. like, genuinely humbling. i lasted four minutes. FOUR. and i talk for a living (i'm literally writing this). the game starts easy, right? "describe your morning routine." cute. i'm like okay bet, woke up, hit snooze like five times, made coffee, whatever. no "um." i'm feeling like a genius. then it hits you with "explain how a bill becomes a law." SIR?? i don't even know how a bill becomes a law WITH the ums. i'm standing there, mouth open, brain doing the spinning wheel of death, and i go "um" so fast it's actually embarrassing. the game doesn't even beep or anything. it just shows the word "um" real big on screen like a disappointed parent. brutal. disrespectful. deserved. and the worst part? the more you try NOT to say it, the more your brain wants to say it. it's like when someone says "don't think about a pink elephant." guess what you're thinking about now. exactly. i started replacing "um" with "uh" and the game caught that too. it's SMART. it's listening. it's judging. turns out this whole thing is based on real science, which sent me down a rabbit hole at 3am (again, normal). linguists say "um" and "uh" are actually called "filled pauses" and we use them to hold the floor while our brain catches up. so the game is basically training you to fight your own nervous system. no wonder it feels impossible. my neurons were fighting for their lives. people online are posting their attempts and it's a full-on comedy show. grown adults freezing mid-sentence, sweating, going silent for ten seconds, then whispering "um" like it's a curse word. one guy tried to describe a triangle and lost in 8 seconds. a triangle. three sides. gone. i've never felt more seen. and honestly? this is the kind of low-stakes chaos the internet was built for. no ads, no pay-to-win, no battle pass. just you, your vocabulary, and the crushing weight of your own verbal tics. it's giving "wordle" energy but meaner. it's giving "i can fix my public speaking" and then absolutely not fixing it. the game's blowing up because it's stupidly simple and stupidly hard, which is the exact recipe for a viral moment. you think you're good at talking until a screen dares you to just... not say one tiny word. spoiler: you're not. i'm not. nobody is. my group chat has been destroyed by this for 48 hours straight and i regret nothing. so yeah. download "Um." play it. lose immediately. scream. do it again. it's free, it's short, and it will humble you faster than any job interview ever could. **my take:** "Um" is the perfect little ego check we all needed. it's not deep, it's not fancy, but it exposes something hilarious and true about how we all talk. play it, lose in 30 seconds, and then go outside and touch grass. or don't. you'll be too busy saying "um" at your phone.
