No Man's Sky Just Dropped a Cosmos Update, Because Of Course It…

Persona #3 · Vol: 5000
Gather 'round, fellow gamers and jaded internet dwellers, because your favorite redemption arc just got another patch. Hello Games, the studio that once upon a time became the internet's favorite punching bag, has released yet another free update for No Man's Sky. This one's called the "Cosmos" update, and no, before you ask, it is not a paid DLC. It's free. It's always been free. At this point, Sean Murray could probably cure a disease and some people on Reddit would still comment "yeah but the 2016 launch tho." For those of you living under a rock—or worse, a rock that only plays Call of Duty—No Man's Sky launched in 2016 as possibly the most hyped and most disappointing game in modern history. Then, in a plot twist that would make M. Night Shyamalan jealous, the devs just kept working on it. For eight years. For free. No microtransactions, no battle passes, no "pay $9.99 to unlock the color blue." Just endless updates that turned a meme into a genuinely beloved space exploration game. So what's in the Cosmos update? According to the patch notes that I definitely read and didn't just skim, we're getting improved planetary generation, deeper space anomalies, and some new lore that'll make the lore nerds feel things. There's also supposedly better creature AI, which is great news for anyone who's ever watched a space cow walk directly into a rock for twenty minutes. The update also brings enhanced visual effects for atmospheric entry and some new discoveries tied to the Atlas, which is the mysterious cosmic entity that's basically the game's version of "we don't know what's going on either, just roll with it." Now, here's the thing. If you're one of those people who still holds a grudge against this game because you preordered it in 2016 and felt personally victimized by a video game trailer, I have news for you: it's been eight years. Let it go. Elsa-style. The game is good now. Like, actually good. It has a "Very Positive" rating on Steam. It won awards. People play it for hundreds of hours. Your 2016 rage is now just a personality quirk. The Cosmos update continues Hello Games' bizarre business model of "make game, fix game, keep giving free stuff, refuse to elaborate." It's honestly kind of suspicious. What's their angle? Are they just nice? Is this some kind of long con? Are they secretly funded by Big Space to make us all want to leave Earth? I don't have answers, and frankly, I'm not sure I want them. What I do know is that this is a great time to jump back in. The game has never been more expansive, more polished, or more confusing in the best possible way. You can build a base on a radioactive hellscape, adopt a weird alien dog, and then fly into a black hole and lose all your stuff. It's a vibe. So congrats to Hello Games for once again doing the thing nobody asked for and everybody benefits from. Meanwhile, other studios are charging $70 for a game that crashes on the title screen. But sure, let's keep bringing up 2016. **Final take:** No Man's Sky is the gaming industry's longest-running apology tour, except the apology is just a bunch of really cool free content. At this point, they've apologized so hard that they've lapped everyone else. If you're still mad, you're the problem. Go build a space base and chill out.
