Here's what makes this genuinely strange. Webb was built to confirm the standard cosmological model. It was designed by people who were confident in that model. And the machine itself — the most expensive scientific instrument ever launched, with a gold-plated mirror the size of a tennis court and a sunshield that unfurled like origami in the dark — is doing exactly its job. The telescope isn't broken. The story we've been telling ourselves might be.
This is the part that should make you sit up. Mainstream science media has largely downplayed these findings. Headlines say "mysterious" or "unexpected." Rarely do they say what the data actually implies: that our foundational model of the universe may be incomplete in ways we haven't admitted. Not wrong, necessarily — incomplete. There's a difference, and the difference matters.
