On Christmas Day 2021, a $10 billion machine the size of a tennis court hurled itself a million miles from Earth. NASA told us the James Webb Space Telescope would peer back to the first galaxies and sniff alien atmospheres. Fine. Noble. Boring. What they didn't emphasize is that Webb keeps finding things that, by the standard story, shouldn't exist.
Start with the galaxies that are "too old too soon." Within months of going live, Webb spotted fully formed, mature galaxies dating to when the universe was supposedly a toddler—around 300 million years after the Big Bang. Cosmologists had models. The models said this couldn't happen. The models were wrong. Every time researchers adjust the timeline to fix it, Webb hands them another galaxy that breaks the fix.
Then there's the methane. In 2023, Webb detected methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of K2-18b, a planet 120 light years away in the habitable zone of its star. On Earth, that combo is produced by living things. NASA was careful—"potential biosignature," they said, which is scientist-speak for "we don't want to say aliens and get yelled at." But the signal was strong enough that they scheduled more observation time. Why keep looking if you think it's nothing?
Here's where it gets stranger. Webb was designed to look at the oldest light in the universe. It wasn't designed to find objects that seem to be older than the universe itself. Yet astronomers keep reporting "impossible early galaxies"—massive, organized, spinning structures that should have taken billions of years to form, showing up when the cosmos was barely out of diapers. Some researchers quietly floated the idea that the Big Bang timeline itself might be wrong. That's not a small tweak. That's the foundation.
And the kicker: Webb has also found that some of these early galaxies host supermassive black holes that are too big, too fast. Black holes that should take a billion years to grow appear within a few hundred million. Either our physics is broken, or something else was going on before the Big Bang that we're not allowed to talk about.
NASA's public line stays calm. "New discoveries raise new questions," they say. Sure. But notice how often the corrections run in one direction—toward a universe that's stranger, older, and more crowded than the textbooks admit. Every telescope before Webb found what we expected. Webb keeps finding what we didn't.
Maybe it's just better instruments. Or maybe the universe has been leaving breadcrumbs for a while, and we finally built the eyes to see them.
If Webb keeps this up, the "standard model" of cosmology won't need a revision. It'll need a funeral. And the people who told you the science was settled are going to have a lot of explaining to do. Stay curious—because the cosmos clearly isn't done talking.
