The One Word That Ended a 20-Year Friendship — against update
Persona #2 · Vol: 500
You ever type something so unhinged it changes your life forever? Yeah. That was me last Tuesday. And the word that did it? "Against."
Let me cook. 🍳
So my bestie since third grade—let's call her Meg—texts me at 2 AM: "would u ever be against me." No punctuation. No context. Just vibes and chaos. I'm half asleep, doom-scrolling, and I reply "against what lol." Normal behavior. Correct behavior.
She hits me back with a voice memo. Twelve minutes long. TWELVE. I'm not exaggerating. This girl recorded a whole podcast episode because I asked for clarification. She's crying, she's laughing, she's quoting stuff I said in 2019. Apparently "against" has been living rent-free in her head for WEEKS because I once said I was "against" her new boyfriend's podcast. Which I WAS. It was bad. It had 40-minute intros. Forty. Minutes.
But here's where it gets juicy. 🍿
I posted about this whole situation on my private story—just venting, right?—and it leaked. Within 48 hours, my DMs are a war zone. Half the internet is team "against is a valid word, use it correctly." The other half is team "if you say against without context you deserve whatever happens next." And suddenly I'm America's main character for asking a simple question.
The discourse got so loud that a linguistics professor from Ohio duetted my story and went viral explaining that "against" is one of the most emotionally loaded prepositions in English. Like, it sounds like a declaration of war, not a casual check-in. Who knew?? Not me. Not Meg. Not the 4 million people watching this play out.
Now Meg and I aren't talking. Twenty years. Gone. Over one word. She said I "chose semantics over sisterhood." I said she "chose vibes over clarity." We're both being dramatic and we both know it, but neither of us will text first because that's how pride works in America in 2025.
The wild part? I keep seeing "against" everywhere now. Billboards. Captions. Some brand dropped a whole campaign around it. The algorithm is feeding me my own trauma. That's the internet, baby. It takes your worst moment, slaps a trending sound on it, and serves it back to you at 3x speed.
So here's my take: words are weapons, besties. One syllable can torch a whole relationship. If someone asks if you're against them, just say "never" and move on. Don't be like me. Don't be like Meg. Be normal. Be boring. Be safe.
I'm still not texting her first though. ✌️
